The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
