Weather experts have indicated a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed In Spite of Warnings

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are expected to take place, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," said the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are expected to be cold, meaning additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as snowfall and high winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Warnings Released

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
