Barry Manilow to Undergo a Procedure for Cancer in His Lung.
Barry Manilow announced that he received a diagnosis with lung cancer and will undergo a surgical procedure.
Cancer Caught Early
The 82-year-old singer, known for a string of high-spirited hits from "Mandy" established him as one of pop music’s most beloved showmen, will have an operation to remove part of his lung in an effort to treat the illness, which is at an early phase.
“As my fans are aware, I recently endured six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a return of another five weeks.
“Although I was over the bronchitis and returned to the spotlight for my residency, my excellent physician insisted on an MRI just to ensure that there were no issues.
“The MRI detected a cancerous spot on my lung that must be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was discovered so early.”
Rescheduled Shows
He has postponed a series of planned concerts, but stated he would be back on stage by Valentine’s Day for his longstanding concert series in Las Vegas.
He went on to say: “The doctors do not believe it has traveled and I’m having examinations to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. No chemotherapy. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns.
“I’m looking forward to until I come back to my home away from home in Las Vegas for our February love-themed shows.”
Decades in the Spotlight
Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a concert series in Nevada. The singer has been in the limelight and revealed he is gay in 2017, after wedding his longtime partner and manager in secret in 2014.
The duo were in a discreet partnership for over 35 years. Recently, Manilow discussed how important Kief had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.
“During my rapid rise to fame, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, coming home to an vacant room, you can find yourself in a lot of problems if you, you know, you’re alone evening after evening,” he said.
“But I met Garry right around when it was exploding. And I was spared from having to go back to those empty hotel rooms. I had a person to be vulnerable with or to share joys with.
“I desire that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those rooms by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was fun.”
